Birth

   Fatimah, the only daughter of the Holy Prophet of Islam, was born in Mecca on 20th jumada "th-thaniyah 8 B.H. The good and noble lady Khadijah and the Apostle Of Allah bestowed all their natural love, care and devotion on their lovable and only child Fatimah, who in her turn was extremely fond of her parents.

Character

   The Princess of the House of the Prophet, was very intelligent, accomplished and cheerful. Her sermons, poems and sayings serve, as an index to her strength of character and nobility of mind.Her virtues gained her the title "Our Lady of Light". She was tall, slender and endowed with great beauty, which caused her to be called " az-Zahra" " (the Lady of Light). She was called az-Zahra" also because her light used to shine among those in heaven.

Marriage

   After arriving in Medina, she was married to "Ali, in the first year after Hijrah, and she gave birth to three sons and two daughters.Her children, Hasan, Husayn, Zaynab and Umm Kulthum are well-known for their piety, goodness and generosity. Their strength of character and actions changed the course of history.

The Holy Prophet said, "Fatimah is a piece of my heart". He would go out to receive his daughter whenever she came from her husband"s house. Every morning on his way to the Mosque, he would pass by Fatimah"s house and say, "as-Salamu "alaykum ya ahli bayti "n-nubuwwah wa ma"dani "r-risalah" (peace be on you O the Household of Prophethood and the Source of Messengership).

The Best Woman

   Fatimah is famous and acknowledged as the "Sayyidatu nisa"i "l-"alamin" (Leader of all the women of the world for all times) because the Prophethood of Muhammad would not have been everlasting without her. The Prophet is the perfect example for men, but could not be so for women. For all the verses revealed in the Holy Qur"an for women, Fatimah is the perfect model, who translated every verse into action. In her lifetime, she was a complete woman,being Daughter, Wife and Mother at the same time.As a daughter, she loved her parents so much, that she won their love and regard to such an extent that the Holy Prophet used to rise, whenever she came near him.As a wife, she was very devoted. she never asked "Ali for anything in her whole life.As a mother, she cared for and brought up wonderful children; they have left their marks on the face of the world, which time will not be able to eraze.

Death

   The death of the Apostle, affected her very much and she was very sad and grief-striken and wept her heart out crying all the time.The tragedy of her father"s death was too much for the good, gentle and sensitive lady and she breathed her last on 14th jumada "l-ula 11 A.H.,exactly seventy-five days after the death of her father, the Holy Prophet of Islam.Fatimah died in the prime of her life at the age of eighteen, and no till today knows where is her grave.

It was in the fifth year, or the end of the fourth year of Hegira, that the Archangel Gabriel, appeared before our Prophet [Peace be upon Him!] and announced to him :" O Mohammad! God has sent thee His Greetings, and He orders thee to keep thyself away from Hazrate Khadijeh for forty days! " Our Prophet, even though he had a great affection for his wife, in order to obey God Almighty, submitted himself to this ordeal.

So, for forty days, our Prophet spent his days in fasting, and his nights in deep meditation and prayers. Until the Archangel Gabriel came down to Earth once again and said to him:" 0 Mohammad! God sends His supreme Greetings to thee! He orders thee to be prepared for His precious gift, and His best wishes."

And then the Archangel Gabriel provided a meal for him, and said: " O Mohammad! Thou should eat from this meal.,. "

After our Prophet broke his fast by eating from the Heavenly plate that the Archangel Gabriel had offered him, he received the order to go home to his dear wife. After this event, the Archangel Gabriel came down to our Prophet, and told him: " God has given His solemn Oath to Himself that this very night, a child

shall be conceived from thee and thy wife. "

Hazrate Khadijeh, after having married our Prophet, had been suddenly left alone and ignored most cruelly by other women from her tribe, named "Ghoraysh ".  The women of her tribe didn"t approve of her marriage with our Prophet, so, when she got pregnant, the unborn baby in her womb, became her sole friend in

her isolation and solitude…

One day, when Khadijeh was talking with the baby in her womb, our Prophet entered the house, unexpectedly and asked her most curiously with whom she had been talking during his absence? She told him what was happening... Our Prophet said to her: " The Archangel Gabriel has told me about my beloved daughter.

My race would be coming forth from the womb of this very daughter. There will be religious leaders who shall come to this world, from this lineage, and after the ending of the Revelations to me, these descendants of mine, shall be my rightful successors..."

So, Khadijeh spent her days of pregnancy in this manner, and finally, the happy day in which her beloved daughter was destined to be born, arrived. Our Prophet sent messages to the Ghoraysh women, so that they would come and help his beloved wife for the delivery of the child. But unfortunately none came to help Khadijeh. They sent words that: " Why wouldn"t she listen to us when we told her not to get married to you? Why did she get married to a poor man like you…?!"

But God The Merciful, was aware of the condition of Khadijeh, and he wouldn"t leave her alone… He sent some of his intimate to help her out...

Just as Khadijeh was beginning to deliver her baby, she suddenly saw four women who entered unexpectedly into her private room, They were envelopped by a Heavenly Light that filled the room…

They were none others than : Sara, Abraham"s wife, Assieh, Mozahem’s daughter [ and the Pharao’s wife ], Mary, Imran’s daughter, and finally Safoura, Joshua"s daughter… With the gracious help that they procured, she could  deliver her baby safely into the world.

The baby, as soon as she opened her beautiful eyes in the world, began talking. She said:" I testify to the Mission of my holy father bestowed upon him by The Merciful God, My father is the Prophet of God, and he is the last Prophet, My husband is the patron of great men, and my two sons, are the

heralds of our Religion…"

The Angels brought the joyous news of Fâtemeh’s birth to Heavens, and because of her birth there appeared a brilliant light in the sky, and it lighted everywhere! Never had the Angels of Heavens seen such a beautiful and bright light in Heavens!

This holy baby had nine names: Fâtemeh, Sedigheh, Mobarakeh, Tahereh, Zakieh, Razieh, Marzieh, Mohadesseh, and finally Zahrâ…

Fâtemeh had many suitors. As one would imagine, becoming the son in law of Hazrate Mohammad-e Mostafâ [Peace be upon him! ], was something to be desired, and everybody wished to become such, from the bottom of his heart, and to be granted this supreme honor...

But also because a gracious lady such as Fâtemeh, who was great in wisdom,beauty, and had the most sweetest of the caracters, doubled this fervent wish between men. But Hazrate Mohammad-e Mostafâ [Peace be uon him!], refused all her suitors, and had always the same answer :" I am waiting for the Divine

Command ..."

Finally Ali Ibn Abi Tâleb [ May the Divine Greetings reach him! ], who was our Prophet's cousin and his beloved brother, and had grown up beside the holy Prophet himself, took his courage into his hands and asked for the hand of Fâtemeh. He came respectfully to the house of our Prophet, and knelt in complete respect and submission before our beloved Prophet, without uttering any word, whatsoever, but just waiting...

Our Prophet, by seeing him thus, asked him curiously:" Son of Abou Tâleb! Why have you come to see me ? "

He answered:" I have come to ask for the hand of Fâtemeh... "Our Prophet was overjoyed and he said:" Very well! I welcome this announcement." and then nothing more. Ali asked permission to take his leave. When the people who knew him well, saw him, they asked him  most curiously about the outcome of his request.

Ali repeated the sentence that our Prophet had given him. Those who were listening said:" You should satisfy yourself with this answer. It seems that our Prophet has granted you your wish, and has accepted you into his household."

The fact is : if Ali had, not come forth, nobody could have become Fâtemeh’s husband. This irrefutable truth is assured by what Hazrate Imâm Sâdigh has said about this matter :" If God hadn't created Ali, nobody would have been dignified or worthy enough to become Fâtemeh’s husband..."

Our Prophet, talked about this matter to his beloved daughter, and asked her opinion. Fâtemeh, in front of his father, blushed and kept quiet. But our Prophet had seen enough : he had seen the sign of deep joy in Fâtemeh’s face, and had known that her daughter's silence, was in fact her approval. Our

Prophet came back quickly to tell the good news to Ali .

Our Prophet then required from Ali to respect the custom of giving a dowry to his daughter. Ali had to determine the sum of money that he wished to give to his wife to be... Ali began to enumerate his very limited possessions and said:" All I have is one sword, one camel who helps me bring out water from the well,

and one armour..."

Our Prophet answered:" Go my son, and sell your armour. Then you could procure the sum of my daughter's dowry. "

Ali sold his armoar at 480 dirhams, and then came back quickly to give this sum to our Prophet, and to submit himself to his wishes for further demands. Our Prophet took a small sum of it to buy some possessions for their home [ Ali and Fâtemeh’s ], he also took a small portion of it to buy some perfume for her daughter, and to buy some things for the wedding night.

The list of this simple dowry, is as follows:

* a dress at the price of 7 Dirhams

* a fabric at the price of 4 Dirhams

* a black towel from Kheybar

* a bed, woven with palm leaves

* two cotton mattresses : one made of palm leaves

* the other one from sheep’s wool

* four leather pillows ...

* a woolen curtain

* a bed

* a manual mill

* a leather goatskin [ water skin ]

* a wooden bowl

* a bowl for milking

* a bowl for water

* a green pitcher

* some earthen pots and jars When those ho had bought these things, came back home, they showed this items all to our Prophet and he declared: " May God bestow from His Heavenly Provisions

to this family..." And then the vows of marriage took place...

A month passed by without Ali having the courage to take his bride to his home. Ali went everyday to the mosque, but with no result... Finally, one of the most respected wives of our Prophet said sympathetically

to Ali:" Do you wish me to ask respectfully from our Prophet, to grant you the

permission to take your bride to your home? "

Ali joyously and gratefully aknowledged this and confinned his wish to settle this matter. When our Prophet knew of this matter, he said:" I was expecting Ali to come to me about this matter, and I was hoping that he would tell me himself about his wish…"

But Ali answered:" OProphet of God! I was verily ashamed to ask you such permission ..."

So then, our Prophet asked his wives to prepare a room in their home [ our Prophet's house ] for Ali & Fâtemeh.Then a great number of Ansars [ immigrants ] and also from the Christian community were invited to come to Fâtemeh’s marriage banquet and eat their fill and enjoy themselves… From what history has left us, that night our Prophet, with his gracious and generous hand, provided miraculous food for four thousand guests… Then he put the hand of Fâtemeh into Ali's hand, and prayed for them and said:" May God bring happiness and joy to the beloved daughter of His Prophet!"

There began the married life of Ali and Fâtemeh. From the first, every chore was divided among them : what was inside the house, came to Fâtemeh’s responsability, and what was outside of their home came to Ali's responsability.

Their life was very simple, and required many efforts, so much so that Fâtemeh’s hands soon became hurt and painful, from the manual mill...

Finally a day came when Fâtemeh, in utmost despair, asked his father to give her a maid. His father asked which of the two things were more precious to her ?

A maid, or something much deeper and much better...? Ali was near them; Fâtemeh, with her husband's help, chose what was the better of the two, and our Prophet concluded that the better thing was indeed a prayer that every muslim should feel grateful and most honored to pronounce it, after the daily prayers. He explained:" You have to say 34 times" Allâho Akbar", 33 times" Alhamdolellâh ", and 33 times " Sobhânallâh "

The fact is, their poverty was because they helped the poor. They gave so much to the needy that the reader may indeed feel confused...

One wishes to know  if  they were indeed humans, or were they some heavenly creatures, come to Earth?

It is indeed impossible to comprehend such spiritual greatness and generosity and abnegation...

Fâtemeh was a pure example in her life, but also in her ways of praying. When she would finish her chores, and after having taken care of her little children, she used to begin her long prayers In friday nights, she used to pray until dawn, and cry and ask God that the whole humanity be granted the Divine

Salvation...

The generous gift of the Prophet

When the day came that the famous combat of Kheybar took place, and after the great heroism of Ali Ibn Abi Tâleb before the great gates of Kheybar’s dungeon, the war ended finally, and victory belonged to Muslims.

There was a little village near Kheybar by the name of" Fadak ", and its inhabitants had made peace with the Prophet. They had offered him half of their village to make peace with him, and to show him their loyalty, in return, they had asked the permission to remain in their homeland. This piece of land, became a possession of the Prophet. The Messenger of God gave the money that came from his land to the poor families of Bani Hashem Tribe.

But with the coming of the sourate : Roum, [ where it said ]: " You should

give your relatives' due ", the Messenger of God, offered Fadak to Fâtemeh, by

God's Command.

The true date of Fâtemeh"s martyr is a subject for discussion among Muslims. Some say that it was forty days after the death of our Prophet, some say it was sixty days after, some believe it was seventy five days after, and some say it was ninety days, and some do believe that it was ninety five days after the death of her beloved father. There are some who also believe that Fâtemeh died six months, or even eight months after her illustrious father.

But among the great Islamic scholars, there is an agreement that Fâtemeh died ninety days after her father...

Some say that her grave is in " Baghi " cemetery, and some believe that her grave is situated in her own little house.

·         We pray that Hazatê Fâtemeyeh Zahra takes care of all of us, poor sinners, and that she would be willing to intercede in our favour...! May God hear her intercessions for us and forgive our sins, and let us enter the Paradise!

After the death of Fatima, she began a new life in history. Fatima appears as a halo in the visages of all of the oppressed who later become the multitudes of Islam. All of the usurped, extorted, oppressed, sufferers, all of those whose rights have been destroyed and sacrificed by pressure and have been deceived, had the name of Fatima as their slogan.

The memory of Fatima grew with the love, emotions and wonderful faith of the men and women, who throughout the history of Islam, fought for freedom and justice. Throughout the centuries they were nourished under the merciless and bloody lashes of the Caliphates. Their cries and anger grew and overflowed from their wounded hearts.

This is why in the history of all Moslem nations and among the deprived masses of the Islamic community, Fatima is the source of the inspiration for freedom, the desire of that which is a right, the seekers of justice, the resisters of oppression, cruelty, crime and discrimination.

It is most difficult to speak about the personality of Fatima. Fatima is the woman that Islam wants a woman to be. The concept of her visage is painted by the Prophet himself. He melted her and made her pure in the fire of difficulties, poverty, resistance, deep understanding and the wonder of humanity.

She is a symbol in all the various dimensions of being a woman.

The symbol of a daughter when facing her father.

The symbol of a wife when facing her husband.

The symbol of a mother when facing her children.

The symbol of a responsible, fighting woman when facing her time and the fate of her society.

She herself is an Imam, a guide, that is, an outstanding example of someone to follow, an ideal type of woman and one who bears witness to any woman who wishes to 'become herself' through her own choice.

She answers the question of how to be a woman with her wonderful childhood, her constant struggling and resisting on two fronts, inside and out, in the home of her father, in the home of her husband, in her society, in her thoughts and behavior and in her life.

In the expression of all of the amazing aspects of the great spirit of Fatima, that which causes the most wonder in me, is this that Fatima is the traveling companion, steps in the same steps, flies together with the great spirit of Ali, through the ascension of humanity towards completeness and the stages of the descent of the spirit and the psyche.

She was not just a wife to Ali. Ali looked upon her as a friend, a friend who was familiar with his pains and his great wishes. She was his endless refuge, the one who listened to his secrets. She was the only companion of his loneliness. This is why Ali looked at her with another look and also at her children.

After Fatima, Ali took other wives and he had children from them. But from the beginning, he separates the children who were from Fatima from his other children. The latter are called 'Banff Ali',[that is, sons of Ali] and the former, 'Banff Fatima' [the children of Fatima].

Isn't it strange! When face to face with their father, and he, Ali, the children are related to Fatima. And we saw that the Prophet also saw her with different eyes. From among all of his daughters he would only discipline Fatima. He only relies upon her. From an early age, she accepted the great invitation.

I do not know what to say about her. How to say it? I wanted to imitate the French writer who was speaking one day in a conference about the Virgin Mary. He said, 'For 1700 years all of the speakers have spoken of Mary. For 1700 years, ail philosophers and thinkers of various nations of the East and West have spoken of the values of Mary. For 1700 years, the poets of the world have expressed all of their creative efforts and power in their praise of Mary. For 1700 years, all of the painters and artists have created wonderful works of art showing the visage and states of Mary. But the totality of all that has been said, thought and the efforts of all the artist throughout all of these many centuries were not able to sufficiently describe the greatness of Mary as these words, 'Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ'.'

And I wanted to begin in this manner with Fatima. I got stuck. I wished to say, 'Fatima is the daughter of the great Khadijeh.' I sensed it is not Fatima. I wished to say, 'Fatima is the daughter of Mohammad (‘s).' I sensed it is not Fatima. I wished to say, 'Fatima is the wife of Ali (‘a).' I sensed it is not Fatima. I wished to say, 'Fatima is the mother of Hasan and Hosein.' I sensed it is not Fatima. I wished to say, 'Fatima is the mother of Zainab.' I still sensed it is not Fatima.

Her name is Fatima (AS) and her other names are:

 Zahra, Seddiqeh, Tahereh, Mobarakeh, Batool, Razieh and Marzieh.

The word Fatima means separated and she is named Fatima (AS) because her followers are separated from the Hell because of her.

 Zahra means luminous and Imam Sadeq (pbuh) said:” When Fatima (AS) prayed, she shined for the heavens as the stars shine for people on earth”.

Seddiqeh means someone who says nothing except the truth.

 Tahereh means pure,

Mobarakeh means full of favor and blessing.

 Om-al-Husain (mother of Husain (AS)),

Om-al-A -emmeh (mother of Imams)

Omm-e-Abiha , Omm-e-Abiha means mother of her father and Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) has given her this title and this shows that Fatima (AS) treated Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) as his mother. This fact was proved throughout the history as she cured her father during the wars and when she was at home and many other cases.

In the middle of the night, the cry of a hopeless sorrow flew out of this house.

And then some more...

The women from the Ghorayche tribe, especially those from the Bani Hashem tribe, came out of their houses, and with hair flowing on their shoulders to show the depth of their sorrow, they began marching to Fâtemeh's house, to make their condolences to Hazratê Ali and to Fatemeh's little children, now orphans…

The men of Medina came by large groups to show their respect to Ali, and to mourn with him. Ali was sated in a corner, and Hassan and Hosseyn and Zeynab and Ommo kolssoum were crying unendingly...

The people, on seeing this sad scene began to cry. By what Fâtemeh had demanded from Ali, he announced to his friend Abuzar:" Tell these people that the funeral has been postponed…"

Finally, nightfall came. Ali, with the help of Asmâ, washed the fragile and slim body of Fâtemeh, and covered her with a shrine. When he wanted to close the shroud, he called out his children to come and see their beloved mother for the last time, and to bid farewell to her...

Some say that she was only eighteen, and some say that she was twenty eight years old when she died.

Hassan and Hosseyn, ran hopelessly and sorrowfully to touch once again the the dead body of their young mother... Gone so soon! They wanted to remain at her side and feel her presence near them. Minutes passed by, with only the sound of a tragic crying in the room. They talked lovingly and desperately to their mother, and verily, their sorrow was so deep that none can ever describe it. They said:" O Beloved Mother of Hassan! O Beloved Mother of Hosseyn! We shall feel your absence more deeply by each passing day, and also the absence of our beloved Grand father, Mohammad Mostafâ [ Peace be upon Him! ]. When you reach the realm in which he lives now, please send our love to Him...! Tell him that we are left all alone in this whole world...! "

And then, Fâtemeh's body was taken outside, and with the help of Hassan and Hosseyn, Ammâr, Yâsser, Meghdâd, Aghil, Zobeyr, Abouzar, Salmân, and some of the Bani Hashemi tribe, they left town to take Fâtemeh's body to the graveyard.

Ali, most painfully and desperately, laid down his beloved wife on the ground, and with indescribable sorrow, bid her farewell...

After finishing what was expected of him, he threw with utter desperation and love, some dust on his wife’s grave, and then looked sadly at the Prophet’s grave. He then approached his grave and began a long confidence with him, which lasted a long time...
